Check Taxes Before the Visa
A tax resident generally owes income tax to that country. Even with a visa, a long stay can create a foreign tax bill, and U.S. citizens are still taxed on worldwide income.

- Tax Treaty
- Varies by nationalityDepends on your citizenship and residence. U.S. citizens should check the IRS list of U.S. tax treaties.
- Local Taxation
- Conditionally TaxedStaying over 183 days makes you a tax resident. Check whether a U.S. tax treaty applies.
U.S. citizens abroad generally still file a U.S. return, and benefits like the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion require one. Talk to a qualified tax professional about your situation.

Notes
Since January 27, 2025, the remote work condition applies automatically to all visitor visas (Visitor Visa and NZeTA). Remote work for overseas employers and clients is allowed. No separate minimum income (proof of expenses of NZD 1,000 per month). Whether foreign remote income is taxed depends on your length of stay and any applicable U.S. tax treaty; it is fully taxable after 183 days.
